Chapter Five

Hacker had glimpsed the Verum’s meeting room the day before. The Verum complex had been dug into a mountainside, and most of the space—communications, research, medical—was reinforced and utilitarian. But the meeting room was different: circular walls made of smooth, natural red rock. A large ring of a table was centered in the space, while daylight spilled down from above like a waterfall of golden energy. A shimmer in the air suggested that the vortex power was concentrated inside the chamber, focusing hearts and minds on what was to come and what needed to be done.

During the Pact war, Hacker had often been left outside of the rooms where important decisions were made. This time, he had a seat at the table. But it was when Ellen sat down beside him that he felt as if he belonged.

The date had been a success. The humans were on to something.

How soon could he kiss her again?

She did something to him that made his old soldier’s body sing. He liked the hard line of her jaw. Her high cheekbones—effortlessly fierce. The wings of her brows—suggesting movement and action. She was direct, uncompromising, single-minded, and therefore, the sexiest female he’d ever encountered.

He would save her world. Today he had the key. He’d debated talking it over with her at dinner, but the context had felt wrong, and the work wasn’t ready.

The chamber filled, chatter rising as everyone took a seat. It seemed there were no assigned places at the table, a stranger on his left, which meant Ellen had chosen to sit next to him instead of her comrades.

Because of their date. He did owe Cindy for negotiating up from coffee to dinner.

The din of the crowd rose, and a few moments later, a man stood; he was some thirty-four degrees around the circumference of the table from Hacker’s position. The talk diminished immediately.

“I’m Max Priest,” he said.

So Priest was his name, not his function.

“For those of you who don’t know me,” he continued, “I am responsible for the North American division of the Verum. The Red Rock group has always done exemplary work hiding our existence from the off-worlders who have visited our planet over the ages. Today, we welcome them into our council. How about we begin by going around the table and introducing ourselves. Simon?”

The man next to Priest sat up taller. “Simon Kent, Time Runner, Alpha Company.”

Next to him a woman smiled. “Debra Hawkins. Time Runner, Omega Company.”

Hacker felt Ellen lightly hit his arm, and he looked at her.

She leaned over to him—his blood hummed—and she spoke low, “Teams have been doing jumps all night. Priest has runners scheduled every three minutes. The Verum has been preparing for this for a long time—elaborate plan—and now it’s all in play.”

Hacker knew that they’d be sending their best, and he’d be going with her. “When do you go again?”

Cindy from the Red Rock Intergalactic Dating Agency introduced herself, to the response of a few snickers. Clearly, these Verum didn’t know how useful and deadly she could be.
